Multi-tone handpans

In its basic form, the handpan usually has 9 or 10 notes. Over time, however, makers began searching for ways to add more notes to the instrument, thereby expanding its musical possibilities. Today, there are handpans with 12, 14, 17, or even 21 notes – often divided between the top and bottom sides of the instrument.

Multi-note handpans are highly demanding to manufacture and tune. Every additional note must resonate precisely with the others for the instrument to maintain its clarity, balance, and beautiful harmonic character. A truly well-sounding multi-note handpan therefore requires a high level of craftsmanship and experience.

We have been developing our own Savita multi-note handpans for many years. Musicians from all over the world play them, and many write to us saying they are among the most beautifully sounding handpans they have ever had the opportunity to play. Multi-note handpans are not meant only for advanced players. They can also be a wonderful choice for complete beginners who want wider musical possibilities from the very start and more space to discover their own melodies. The number of notes is not proportional to the difficulty of playing – even a handpan with more notes can be played simply, intuitively, and with joy. For more experienced players, multi-note handpans offer broader melodic options, room for more complex compositions, and greater creativity during improvisation.
