INTERESTING FACTS
Handpan, also known as Pantam or Hang drum, is a musical instrument with roots dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this time, in the areas of Trinidad and Indonesia, the first attempts at melodic instruments made of metal (barrels and metal containers) began to appear, commonly known as "steeldrum." These instruments featured multiple tones around the rim tuned to different scales and were mostly played with mallets.
The first instruments resembling the modern handpan appeared around the year 2000 in Switzerland, developed by the company Panart, and the instrument was named Hang, or Hang drum ("hang" means "hand" in the Swiss dialect). Panart no longer manufactures these instruments, and since then, dozens of other manufacturers of these instruments have emerged.
Handpan is an instrument you can enjoy playing at home or at the highest level in concert, combining it with other instruments or additional handpans. Learning to play the handpan starts with basic tone production techniques and their combinations, elementary rhythmic structures, and progresses to more advanced techniques, complex rhythmic patterns, and creative improvisation. You can learn all of this during lessons with Pavel Sedláček.
