Shakuhachi

Shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute with a very distinctive tone and deep tradition. It is played with a special embouchure over the edge of the upper end, so every tone reacts sensitively to the breath, the angle of blowing, and subtle changes in the mouth.

Its sound can be quiet and almost whispering, but also full, carrying, and distinct. It is precisely this variability that is beautiful about the shakuhachi. One tone can have many shades - it can tremble slightly, fade away, get louder, soften, or almost dissolve in the breath.

In the Japanese tradition, the shakuhachi is also associated with meditative playing and focused listening to the tone. It is not a flute that is just "played through" quickly. Rather, it invites you to slow down, be patient, and discover gradually.

The shakuhachi is suitable for meditation, solo playing, Japanese musical inspiration, and for those who like instruments with a deep, thoughtful character. Making it sound can be more demanding at first than with a recorder or a Native American flute, but the journey to a full tone is part of its charm.
