ABOUT THE MICROPHONE
NUVO N22 is a modern active ribbon microphone designed for close miking of instruments. It features a lightweight body, good high-frequency response, and reduced tendency for proximity effect. The N22 far exceeds the usual expectations of ribbon microphone technology and changes the way ribbon microphones are used for recording. Even at a distance of a few centimeters from the sound source, it can deliver a balanced frequency response. Its extended high-frequency response eliminates the need for sound engineers to blend in additional microphone signals into the mix, avoiding issues related to recording in small spaces or quiet chambers.
The N22 has a boost at 3 kHz, making it ideal for recording vocals, electric guitars, bass cabinets, kick drums, acoustic guitars, and percussion. The N22 naturally reduces the proximity effect, with optimal performance at distances within a few centimeters from the source (up to 40 cm). In traditional ribbon microphones, the proximity effect can be so strong that it even muddies the midrange. Correcting this phenomenon with equalization can be extremely challenging. Unlike these traditional microphones, the N22 provides a more balanced sound closer to the source and can easily handle the sound pressure of a high-gain amplifier or kick drum while capturing the essential details of these instruments.
The N22 uses the same type of transformer found in the AEA A440 and R84A microphones, providing an additional 12 dB of output and stable impedance. Although the microphone performs excellently with AEA preamps, which are optimized for ribbon microphones, it is not dependent on high impedance or preamp gain. The strong output is particularly beneficial when recording quiet sources, such as vocals or acoustic guitars. The active circuitry prevents noise, interference in long cable runs, and issues when operating close to large lighting equipment.
