Description
Udu is a percussion instrument that originates from regions of Nigeria and belongs to "aerophones" and "idiophones". The word "udu" means "pottery" and also "peace" in the language of the Ibo tribe. Udu is a ceramic vessel with a short neck and a round hole on the side. The usual height of udu ranges between 20 and 50 cm, with large instruments having a deep sound and small ones a high sound. The diameter of the holes is typically 3 to 7 cm.
Playing the udu produces many different interesting sounds depending on the playing technique, which is very individual. While playing, one can sit with the instrument on their lap or on the ground on a soft cushion. It is also possible to play while sitting on a chair or standing with the instrument placed on a suitable stand. The neck of the instrument should be oriented vertically upwards, obliquely, or horizontally.
